"David Krane’s music is exceptional on a number of levels. When matters get dark, he provides film noir; when they lighten up, he gives pin-point accurate 1940s swing and boogie-woogie. Krane has also composed an Act One closer that you would have whistled through the entire intermission as well as a rousing eleven o’clock number that rates an 11 on a ten-scale. For those who think that an audience only shouts “Whoos!†after rock numbers, the WaterTower crowd proved them wrong. Even more impressive is that Krane provided arrangements as well as orchestrations (the latter in conjunction with Bruce Coughlin). The close harmony is not to die for, but to live for."

“Because our characters are from the future, they have no past, so when all the big people or the FBI or L.B. Mayer are interested in who they are, who do you think they are if they cannot trace them? Who could they possibly be?†Krane said. Krane crafted every aspect of the score. “It’s truly a jazz-inspired score. I’m not making a pastiche. I’m not making new versions of the same tunes people know. I’m creating my own version of a modern jazz score through the 21st-century aesthetic because the entire show is through our 21st-century characters’ eyes.,†Krane said. Peterman considers the show the crown jewel of the theater’s season. “This is what a Broadway musical should be. It’s a really great entertaining piece. It’s very sophisticated,†Peterman said.

When a pair of struggling New York composers are magically transported back to the golden age of movie musicals, it feels like we’re being set up for an evening of nostalgia. What results is the opposite: a cautionary tale. If they don’t make ‘em like they used to, it turns out, maybe that’s a good thing. Goin’ Hollywood, a brilliant new musical which made its world premiere Thursday at WaterTower Theatre in Addison, manages to have it both ways. It’s a humorous celebration of the heyday of Louis B. Mayer’s MGM Studios and stars like Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra, complete with inside jokes and show-stopping numbers. But it’s also a warning. Underneath the glitz and glam is a crumbling studio system threatened by TV and politics, rampant sexism and antisemitism and the blacklist.

So happy that our fabulous production of the RNT OKLAHOMA! starring Hugh Jackman, Josefina Gabrielle, Maureen Lipman and Shuler Hensley which was preserved after its run will be shown in cinemas around the world to commemorate its 25th Anniversary! I was the first ever to be given permission by the R&H Estate to compose new dance arrangements for the brilliant and inspirational Susan Stroman. The new Dream Ballet is among the most cherished works of my life.

Alice does not feel like she belongs in the 21st Century, but she never dreamed that while at lunch with her best friend and writing partner, Garson Stein, a magical birthday wish would find them both instantly transported back in time to 1949 Hollywood. What do you do when you get your wish? Alice and Garson land smack in the golden age of movie musicals, where they land their dream job writing for L. B. Mayer at MGM Studios and are surrounded by all the glittering stars of Hollywood, but they soon see that under all the glamour lies a studio system crumbling, the blacklist threatening their closest allies, and soon their eyes are opened to Hollywood's darker side. WaterTower's 27th season wraps up in style with Goin' Hollywood, a big splashy musical, with a heart as big as MGM, and a totally original, catchy, jazz-tinged score composed by David Krane and a snappy script & clever lyrics written by Stephen Cole. We are excited that this glamorous musical will be the end-cap production in our 2022-2023 season!

Miranda leads the movie's splashy centerpiece number, a direct counterpart to Bert's rooftop "Step in Time" called "Trip a Little Light Fantastic," performed with a large chorus of Jack's fellow lamplighters on bicycles, wielding the ladders they use on the job. Marshall, who also choreographed the film with DeLuca, nods back not just to vintage Disney here, but also to the MGM movie musical in the number's exuberant build of layer upon intricate layer of dance moves.

It's a totally original story and for our demo we've got a fantastic Broadway cast: Santino Fontana, Jenn Gambatese, Tony Yazbeck, Laura Darrell, Adam Heller, Eddie Korbich, Bruce Warren, Bill Nolte, Bruce Landry, Daniel Plimpton, Tripp Hampton, Morgan Cowling, Erin Rubico & Erin Lindsey Krom. It's about a 21st century writing team whose power of creativity magically transports them to the Golden Age of Hollywood, to MGM in 1949, where they think they will thrive. And they do, only to get caught up in the era of the devastating Hollywood blacklist and sexual discrimination. I've composed a uniquely tuneful jazz-inspired score reminiscent of the great MGM musicals, yet not at all sounding old fashioned or pastiche. Stephen Cole has written both the brilliant book and the impeccably crafted lyrics. I've designed a dedicated website so that the demo can be easily heard. www.goinhollywood.com Although we didn't record the entire show, this demo contains a good 3/4s of it as many numbers are built into full scenes, and there was no way to record bits of it without dramatic context. Working alongside them is David Krane, one of Broadway's veteran dance arrangers whose long list of credits include working with Marshall on Kiss of the Spider Woman and the Roundabout Cabaret — not to mention the 1977 Broadway revival of Kurt Weill's Happy End, starring newcomer Meryl Streep. The soundtrack album is loaded with numerous swaths of incidental music, all glorious and sounding like pure Sondheim. The composer, of course, deserves full credit for his score and everything about it; but he is excellently served by Krane as well as longtime associates Tunick and Gemignani. If non-theatregoers of the world are to know Sondheim only from the movies, this is the way to go.

Into the Woods, the deliciously arch, deceptively deep, fractured fairy tale with its soaring Sondheim showstoppers, has made it to the big screen virtually untouched by Hollywood's big, tall, terrible giants, whose meddling can so often make a mess of things. He is a protégé of Leonard Bernstein from whom he received grants while studying at the famed Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Bernstein began David's Broadway career when he chose him to be a musical assistant on his last show, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
